Die Missionsarbeit der Brüdergemeine auf dem Gebiet der heutigen Republik Südafrika begann mit einem einzigen Bruder, dem berühmten Georg Schmidt (1709-1785). Er stammte ursprünglich aus Mähren und war eigentlich zum Fleischer ausgebildet worden. Im Jahre 1737 machte er sich jedoch allein auf die Reise in die Kapregion Afrikas, arbeitete dort unter schwierigen Bedingungen aber durchaus erfolgreich. Er gründete schließlich in der Region Baviaanskloof die erste Siedlung, das heutige Genadendal. Im Jahre 1744 kehrte er nach Europa zurück. Nach diesem ersten Projekt beschloss die Generalsynode von 1789, wieder Missionare nach Südafrika zu schicken. Hendrik Marsfeld, Daniel Schwinn und Christian Kühnel reisten 1792 nach Südafrika und richteten die Missionsarbeit wieder ein. Nach der Teilung in zwei Missionsgebiete im Jahre 1869 wurde die westliche Region 1960 Kirchenprovinz der Brüder-Unität, und 1977 bestätigte die Unitätskonferenz schließlich die Vereinigung der beiden Regionen unter einem gemeinsamen Dach: der Moravian Church in South Africa. The missionary work of the Moravian Church in the area of the present-day republic of South Africa began with only one Brother, the famous Georg Schmidt (1709-1785). Schmidt was originally a butcher and was born in Moravia. In 1737 he made the journey to the Cape area all alone, and worked there under difficult circumstances but with success. Schmidt founded the first settlement in the region of Baviaanskloof, which was later called Genadendal. Finally he returned to Europe in 1744. After this first important attempt, the General Synod of 1789 decided to make a second attempt, and in 1792 Hendrik Marsfeld, Daniel Schwinn and Christian Kühnel reestablished the mission work of the Moravian Church. After the division into two areas in 1869, the western area became a church province of the Moravian Church in 1960, and in 1977 the Unity Conference confirmed the union of the two areas under one roof: the Moravian Church in South Africa. Mit der finanziellen Hilfe des Archivvereins wurden 2022 / 2023 zwei Ölportraits restauriert. Dabei handelt es sich um ein Jugendbildnis und ein Altersbildnis der Anna Nitschmann (1715 - 1760) jeweils in der Größe von ca. 50 x 60 cm. Die Restaurierung wurde durch Gerthilde Sacher aus Pesterwitz hervorragend ausgeführt.

Two oil portraits in the size of approx. 50 x 60 cm were restored in 2022 / 2023 with the financial support of the Friends‘ Association of the Unity Archives. These portraits show Anna Nitschmann (1715 - 1760) as a young woman and at an older age. The restoration was carried out excellently by Gerthilde Sacher from Pesterwitz.

Am 4. April 2023 lädt das Unitätsarchiv und der Archivverein zum Vortrag um 19:30 Uhr in die Räume des Unitätsarchivs ein. Dr. Susanne Kokel aus Siegen wird ihre Dissertation vorstellen: »Kredit bei aller Welt. Die Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine und ihre Unternehmungen 1895-1945«. Am 2. Mai 2023 wird um 19:30 Uhr Prof. em. Adam Jones aus Polenz bei Leipzig sprechen über: »Herrnhuter Fotografien aus Ost- und Südafrika 1900-1940«. Alle Interessierten sind sind schon jetzt recht herzlich dazu eingeladen.

On April 4th, 2023, at 7:30 pm, the Unity Archives and the Association of the Friends of the Unity Archives invite you to a lecture in the rooms of the Unity Archives. On May 2nd, 2023, also at 7:30 pm in the Unity Archives, Prof. em. Adam Jones from Polenz near Leipzig will speak about: »Moravian photographs from East and South Africa 1900-1940«.
