Die Mission der Brüdergemeine begann gerade einmal zehn Jahre nach der Gründung Herrnhuts mit einem mutigen Entschluss und der Reise von Leonhard Dober und David Nitschmann im Jahre 1732 in die Karibik. Die Insel Saint Thomas war ihr Ziel, und dort wurde der Grundstein für die gesamte folgende internationale Missionsarbeit gelegt. Die drei Inseln bildeten damals die dänische Kolonie Dänisch-Westindien, heute gehören sie als Amerikanische Jungferninseln zu den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Die dortige Brüdergemeine allerdings ist Teil der Provinz Westindien Ost. Die die drei Inseln betreffenden Akten im Unitätsarchiv befinden sich für die Zeit von 1731 bis 1900 im Bestand des Missionsdepartements der Unitäts-Ältestenkonferenz (R.15.B), für die Zeit von 1900 bis 1931 im Bestand der Missionsdirektion (MD), die Unterlagen zur Finanzverwaltung im Bestand MDF. Der Bestand enthält die historisch bedeutsamen Dokumente des Beginns, beispielsweise die schriftliche Erklärung Leonhard Dobers nach Saint Thomas zu reisen, oder Tagebücher und Briefe Nitschmanns und Dobers von der Reise und ihrem Aufenthalt in der Karibik. Weiterhin finden sich vor allem serielle Akten: Diarien, Protokolle, Korrespondenzakten, Jahresberichte und finanzielle Unterlagen. Bei den Diarien handelt es sich sowohl um eine große Anzahl von Reisetagebüchern verschiedener Missionare wie auch um die Diarien der Gemeinden Neu-Herrnhut und Nisky auf Saint Thomas, Friedensberg und Friedensthal auf Saint Croix, Emmaus und Bethany auf Saint John. Ein weiterer wichtiger Bestand befindet sich in der Manuskriptsammlung der Bibliothek (NB.VII.R.2 und 3): Übersetzungen biblischer und liturgischer Texte, Wörterbücher, Grammatiken und Gesangbücher. Viele interessante ergänzende Ansichten und Pläne finden sich darüber hinaus in der Topographischen Sammlung (TS), weiterhin eine Anzahl von Fotos in der Fotosammlung der Mission (LBS). The mission of the Moravian Church began just 10 years after the founding of Herrnhut with a courageous decision and the journey of Leonhard Dober and David Nitschmann to the Caribbean in 1732. Their destination was the island of Saint Thomas, where the foundation stone for the following international missionary work of the Moravian Church was laid. At that time the three islands formed the Danish colony of the Danish West Indies, today they belong to the United States of America as the American Virgin Islands. The congregations of the Moravian Church on the islands, however, are part of the Eastern West Indies Province. The Unity Archives' records concerning the three islands for the period 1731-1900 are in the inventory of the Mission-Department of the Unity Elder's Conference (record group R.15.B), while records for the period 1900-1931 are in the inventory of the Mission-Direction (record group MD - Eastern West Indies). Records pertaining to financial management are in the record group MDF. The record groups contain the historically significant documents from the beginning, for example Leonhard Dober's written declaration to travel to Saint Thomas, or Nitschmann and Dober's diaries and letters from their journey and stay in the Caribbean. In addition to these documents from the early days of the mission, the inventories mainly contain serial files: diaries, minutes, correspondence, annual reports, accounting documents. Among the diaries are the travel diaries of various missionaries and the diaries of the individual mission stations or congregations (such as New Herrnhut und Nisky on Saint Thomas, Friedensberg und Friedensthal on Saint Croix, Emmaus und Bethany on Saint John). A second important group of documents belongs to the library’s manuscript collection (NB.VII.R.2 and 3): translations of biblical and liturgical texts, dictionaries, grammars, and hymn books. Interesting supplementary documents may be found in the Topographical Collection (TS), which contains illustrations, maps, and plans, as well as in the collection of photographs (LBS).All these record groups (except for the collection of photographs and the library) can be researched using our online searching aids: www.unitaetsarchiv.findbuch.net.
